눕다 영어로 Lie down ? Lay down? 헷갈리는 분 들어오세요

영어 공부하면서 헷갈리는 표현들 중 TOP 5에 들어가는 표현! 

바로 Lie vs. Lay 입니다. 

그 이유는 둘 다 누워있는 느낌(?)은 있는데 문장 내에서 

어느 때 Lay 를 쓸지 Lie 쓸지 구분하는데 정~ 말 오래 걸렸거든요.

 

오늘 예문과 퀴즈를 함께 풀어 보면서 연습해 보시면 더 이상 헷갈리지 않으실 거예요! 

 

1. 눕다 영어로 Lie down 일까요 Lay down일까요?

우선 lie lay 각각의 뜻을 명확하게 짚고 넘어갑시다. 

 

1. Lie (자동사) 수평으로 눕다. 놓다.목적어를 취하지 않는다. 주체가 '사람' 인 경우가 많다 

▶꿀Tip : Lie는 내가 주체적으로 누워있을 때 씁니다. lie와 스펠링이 같은 '거짓말'을 떠올려서, 

→ 내가 거짓말을 하고, 내가 자발적으로 눕다.라고 연상시켜 보세요. 

2. Lay(타동사) : ~ 을 눕히다. ~ 을 놓다. 목적어를 취한다. Lay 뒤에 목적어로 사람이나 사물이 온다. 

→Lay something/someone 누군가를 무엇을 눕히다/놓다. 내가 눕는 주체가 아닌 다른 것(사람)을 눕히는 것, 놓는 것!

 

2. 예시를 통해 알아볼까요? 

 

She decided to lie down and relax for a while.

그녀는 한동안 누워서 쉬기로 결정했다. → 주체자인 그녀가 누워있는 거죠! 

Please lay the book on the table.

그 책을 테이블 위에 놓아주세요. → 목적어인 책을 놓아두는 것!

lie는 주체자가 눕는 것!  

lay는 목적어를 눕히거나 놓는 것! 즉, 항상 뒤에 목적어가 나온다!!
